Scripps Ranch Boys Collect 300 Pairs of Glasses for Underserved Communities

SCRIPPS RANCH, SAN DIEGO — With compassion beyond their years, three young boys from Scripps Ranch schools
have stepped up to make a real impact in their community — collecting and donating more than 300 pairs of
glasses to the Shiley EyeMobile to help underserved children and adults across San Diego.
Drew Bidermann, Luke Bidermann, and Brandon Lo launched the grassroots glasses drive earlier this spring
after learning that many low-income families lack access to basic vision care. Their mission: help others see

the world more clearly.

The trio, with the support of their families and Kim Bidermann – a 19-year member of the Downtown San Diego
Lions Club – placed donation boxes throughout Scripps Ranch, including schools and local optometry offices.
Over the past year, the boys rallied neighbors, classmates, and community members to donate gently used

prescription glasses and cases.

The boys all expressed that, “Some kids can’t even read the board in school because they can’t see!”
Their collection was officially donated to the Shiley EyeMobile for Children, a mobile clinic operated by UC
San Diego Health that delivers free eye exams and prescription glasses to children in underserved
communities. The donation was celebrated on June 11 at Park de la Cruz in San Diego, where the glasses will

be cleaned, sorted, and distributed to children and adults in need.

Kim Bidermann helped connect the boys with the EyeMobile team through the Lions Club, which has long
supported the clinic’s efforts. “These young men poured time and effort into this project,” she said. “They saw a
need, and instead of waiting for someone else to solve it, they stepped up. I’m incredibly proud of them.”
In a time when good news can feel scarce, the actions of Drew, Luke, and Brandon offer a heartening reminder

that the spirit of giving — and the power to create change — can come from the youngest among us!
